    What is Capoeira

    Capoeira is a unique Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends dance, music, song, acrobatics and fight into a game that offers the world a tool and methodology to embrace the highest aspirations of the human spirit: liberty, joy, freedom, and wisdom.
    Capoeira is roughly 500 years old and was developed in Brazil by African slaves. It is the only surviving Martial Art native to the New World. Capoeira is more than just another martial art, as it is an art of expression, play and personal interaction developed in the oppressive atmosphere and environment of slavery of colonial Brazil.

Presidente & Fundador

Our Capoeira master is a Rio de Janeiro native who has over 40 years experience in our art. Before settling in Australia, our mestre taught and performed Capoeira in Spain (Madrid, Tenerife, Canary Island), Argentina, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Maldives, Cambodia and Philippines. Mestre Torpedo was the 1st Capoeira master to live and teach long term in Thailand and the Philippines, and is a pioneer in Asia. He now lives on the Gold Coast.

Sydney Academy

Mestre Lobo

Our Sydney academy is headed by the Asia Pacific Capoeira Champion as crowned by the Superliga Brasileira de Capoeira in 2002. A practitioner of Capoeira for 27 years, Lobo was awarded his "Mestre" graduation by Mestre Torpedo on 4 Nov 2023. Mestre Lobo set up academies and taught Capoeira around Asia and all around Sydney- Avalon, Burwood, Beecroft, Chatswood, Dee Why, Hornsby, Killara, Millers Point, Maroubra, Mosman, Narabeen, Penrith, Redfern, St Ives, Wahroonga. Mestre Lobo taught and lived in Bangkok, Jakarta, Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur, Cebu and Manila. Many of those classes continue to this day under his students. He has awarded the official Capoeira rank of “Professor” and "Instrutor" to 11 of his students in Philippines and Australia, and now after 13 years living in Asia has returned to Sydney...

Professora Pantera Negra

I believe Capoeira compliments our day to day living and it makes our participants and supporters feel very inclusive."
Professora Pantera Negra began her martial arts journey teaching and competing in full contact and non-contact Karate tournaments in local, state and national competitions, as well as champions in Kata (Formation) for Kyokushin Kai Kan. The real love affair with Capoeira started in 2008 when she started learning our art and other Brazilian and South American dance.

Pro Bono

Our Australian academies fund pro bono Capoeira classes at orphanages and foundations in the Philippines. While living in Cebu City, our Sydney head teacher, ContraMestre Lobo, with his students, Monitor Coruja and Professor Rabo de Arraia, began pro bono Capoeira classes at 5 community centres and orphanages. Those classes continue today, taught by the 8 instructors in Cebu, most classes run by Professor Rabo de Arraia. Our orphanage classes are financed by our Gold Coast and Sydney classes and our students’ donations.

We are proud to continue funding pro bono Capoeira classes in Cebu City, where ContraMestre Lobo's mother grew up. We want to teach at every orphanage in the Philippines, and can reach more through your donations, or just by joining our classes. Capoeira, as a holistic art, can develop children's bodies, motor skills, reflexes, co-ordination, rhythm, musical ability, voices and confidence, all in a joyous atmosphere.
